Children’s Photography Workshop Rongoma Primary School

In April 2023, we had the incredible opportunity to visit Rongoma Primary School in Himo, Tanzania, to run a photography workshop with the children. The school sits in a beautiful but challenging setting, where resources are scarce and the learning environment is in desperate need of improvement. The walls of the classrooms are crumbling, the buildings have no doors or windows, and most significantly, the school has no proper toilet facilities. It was immediately clear that the physical conditions were making it difficult for the children to focus and learn.

During our visit, the headmaster welcomed us warmly and spoke openly about the difficulties the school faces. One of the most pressing issues he raised was the lack of desks. Many of the pupils are forced to sit on the floor during lessons—a situation that becomes even more difficult during the rainy season, when the damp ground adds discomfort and distraction to an already tough learning environment.

We knew we had to do something. So, in March 2024, with the help of supporters and donations, we were proud to deliver brand-new desks—enough to seat 30 children. Each desk cost just £35, and the funds also supported a local carpenter who crafted them with care and pride. Watching the desks arrive and seeing the children’s reactions was deeply moving. Their joy and excitement were immediate, and the sense of dignity the desks brought to their classroom was powerful. It was a reminder that even small contributions can create a big impact.

But our work doesn’t stop here. While the new desks have made a meaningful difference, there’s still so much more we can do to support these children. Next, we’d like to supply Rongoma Primary School with sports equipment—starting with simple but essential items like footballs and netballs. Physical activity is a vital part of childhood, and giving the students a chance to play, compete, and have fun is just as important as improving their classroom conditions.

We are committed to continuing this journey with Rongoma, working alongside the school to bring lasting, joyful change—one desk, one ball, and one bright future at a time.
