Children’s Photography Workshop Makuyuni Primary School

When we first arrived at Makuyuni Primary School in Himo, Tanzania in April 2023, the energy of the children was undeniable—curious, excited, and eager to learn. But their environment told a different story. The school buildings were run down, with no windows or doors, and no proper toilet facilities. Most noticeably, many of the children were sitting on the classroom floor, trying to focus while hunched over their work. During the rainy season, this becomes even more difficult, as the floors become wet and cold.

We were there to run a photography workshop, giving the students a chance to explore their creativity. But after speaking with the headteacher, it quickly became clear what the school needed most urgently: desks. A place to sit and learn comfortably. Something so simple, yet so impactful.

Determined to help, we spent the following months raising funds, and in March 2024, we returned to Makuyuni with a delivery of 10 brand-new desks—enough for 30 students. Each desk, costing just £35, was crafted with care by a local carpenter, meaning this small project also supported the local economy. Seeing the students’ faces light up when the desks arrived was unforgettable. There was joy, pride, and a genuine shift in the atmosphere of the classroom. The children sat upright, shared smiles, and got straight to work.

The desks have transformed their learning space, giving students a sense of dignity and making it easier to focus, write, and engage with lessons. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the smallest changes can create the biggest impact.

But our work at Makuyuni isn’t done. Next, we hope to provide the school with basic sports equipment—starting with footballs and netballs. Play is a crucial part of a child’s development. It builds confidence, connection, and joy—qualities every child should have the chance to experience, regardless of where they live.
