Children’s Photography Workshop Korona Primary School

In April 2023, I visited Korona Primary School in Himo, Tanzania, to deliver a photography workshop for the students. What I found was a school full of energy and potential—but also facing serious challenges. The physical state of the school made it clear just how much support was needed. Classrooms had no doors or windows, the walls were worn and deteriorating, and there were no toilet facilities for the children or teachers.

The headteacher spoke candidly about the realities of teaching in such conditions. One issue stood out: the lack of desks. Many of the children were sitting on the floor during lessons. In dry weather, it was difficult enough—but during the rainy season, the ground becomes wet and muddy, making learning deeply uncomfortable and often impossible.

We knew we wanted to help. In March 2024, thanks to generous supporters, we returned to Korona Primary with a delivery of brand-new desks—enough to seat 30 children. Each one was made locally by a skilled carpenter, with every £35 desk providing not just a practical solution for the school, but also a source of income for the community. The desks were delivered with care, and the children were overjoyed. For many, it was their first time having a proper place to sit and write. The impact was immediate.

This simple addition transformed the classroom environment—giving students a renewed sense of pride, structure, and comfort in their learning space.

But this is just one step. Our next goal is to bring sports equipment to the school, starting with basic items like footballs and netballs. Access to play is just as important as access to books. It builds confidence, improves wellbeing, and gives children a chance to express themselves outside the classroom.
