Children’s Pottery Workshop: ECOFO-Mubone School, Burundi

Lives In Focus recently hosted a pottery workshop in Burundi, giving children the opportunity to explore creativity through hands on learning.

In many of the communities we work with, access to creative activities and arts education is extremely limited. Opportunities to experiment, express ideas, and create something with their own hands can be rare for children. Workshops like this help open new ways of learning, encouraging curiosity, patience, and confidence.

The workshop was organised by our Burundi manager, Yves, who partnered with a local women led ceramics studio to deliver the session. Twenty five children took part in the activity, each designing and creating their own pottery pieces using clay.

The children were supported throughout the process by the women from the ceramics studio, who guided them through shaping, moulding, and forming their designs. For many of the children, this was their first experience working with clay and learning about ceramics.

The workshop provided a space for creativity, concentration, and self expression. Activities like this allow children to focus, experiment, and develop problem solving skills in a supportive environment. At the end of the session, the children were able to take their finished creations home with them, something they were extremely proud of.

Alongside the creative activity, all children were provided with breakfast and lunch to ensure they were fuelled and ready to participate fully in the workshop.

This project also supported the wider community by partnering with the local women’s ceramics studio, helping to create income and opportunities for women working in the area.
